Sun Mountain 50k: Pure Pacific Northwest Magic

The Sun Mountain 50k is easily my favorite race, organized by one of my favorite companies, Rainshadow Running. My partner and I have been huge fans for years, and between running and volunteering, we’ve experienced nearly all of their races at least once. There’s something special about Sun Mountain that keeps drawing us back. The beauty of the course is breathtaking, with rolling hills covered in vibrant balsam root and wildflowers—it’s pure Pacific Northwest magic.

This race is also an excellent choice for beginners. The elevation gain is relatively mild, around 4,000 feet, and the trails are non-technical, making the entire course feel very runnable. The miles fly by, and it’s the perfect setting to enjoy nature while challenging yourself. Whether you’re aiming for your first 50k or looking to set a personal record, Sun Mountain strikes that perfect balance between beauty and accessibility. Highly recommend it for runners of all levels!

Located in Winthrop, Washington, the race is usually held in May, which is the perfect time of year. The weather is still cool and mild, but usually sunny. This past year we encountered some hail during the race, but that just added some excitement to an otherwise gorgeous day.
